Geane Vanadia beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and aunt passed away April 16, 2024, in Florence, S.C. after a long battle with Alzheimer’s. Geane was 90 years old. Born June 9, 1933, in New York City, she was the daughter of the late Frieda Rosensweig, an immigrant from Czechoslovakia. Her mother gave her up at birth to an orphanage called the home for Hebrew Children. A few years later she came to live with the family of Samuel and Bertha Westler. They had two other foster daughters, Helen and Pauline, who she grew up with. Geane was raised in New York City by the Westler’s and attended public school. Geane was able to reunite with her biological mother, Frieda, who at this time had married Daniel Sugrue. Frieda and Danny had a daughter Phyllis. Before Geane’s 18th birthday, on March 9, 1951, she married Joseph P. Vanadia and began a new journey of life. Geane had multiple jobs along the years, ranging from office management to various different restaurants, she loved to interact with people, she didn’t know a stranger. She loved to shop, go bowling, and playing Mahjong, listening to music, traveling and entertaining family and friends. Geane continued to live in New York City where she had started to raise their 3 children. In 1974, Geane and her family moved to New Jersey where they lived for 30 more years. Geane’s best friend, Jean, also lived in New York City when she did, and also moved to Jersey at the same time. In 2003 Geane and her husband moved to Florida. In Florida they had an active social life. they both joined an organization, (COP) Citizens on Patrol. They had many happy and fulfilling years in Florida. Joe got ill in 2015 and decided to retire, they moved to Florence, SC to be near their son. They were blessed to have a wonderful, caring family.
Geane is survived by her 3 children, Karen (Howard) Olshansky, Joseph (Kristen) Vanadia, and Janine Monize; her 7 grandchildren, Nicole (Wesley) Davis, Sabrina (Chris) Malkemus, Joseph III (Brittney) Vanadia, Jennifer Milwee, Samantha Monize, Shane Monize, Suuna Monize and Sophia Vanadia: Her 7 great-grandchildren, Adennia, Gemma, Sage, Sora, Griffin, Kairi and Thalia: her sister Phyllis (Joseph) Miceli: former daughter-in-law, Patricia Vanadia and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Geane was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years Joseph P. Vanadia.
A graveside service, directed by Cain Calcutt Funeral Home, will be held at 2pm on Wednesday April 24, 2024, at the Florence National Cemetery. The Family will receive friends from 12 – 1:45pm prior to the service at Cain Calcutt Funeral Home, 512 W 2nd loop Rd, Florence SC 29505.
