Obituary

Robert E. (Bob) Norwood went to be with his savior on Sunday, November 26, 2017. A native of Brevard, NC, he was born April 21, 1926 to the late Harold Ernest and Rosa Wiggs Norwood. He attended Brevard High School, then volunteered in the US Navy in Dec. 1943 and was discharged June 1946 as a Seaman 1st Class. He returned to Brevard to attend Brevard Junior College where he met his first wife. Bob graduated in 1947 and later that same year married Margaret E. Spiro of Asheville where they made their first home. Bob started his career selling insurance for State Capital Life Insurance in Asheville for a few years then became the assistant to the owner of Cagle Music Company. The Norwoods moved to Durham, NC in 1959 for Bob to manage Maus Piano Company branch store. In 1962 he transferred to the Raleigh Maus Piano Company as sales manager for 2½ years. He moved to Florence, SC in 1965 as sales rep. for Hodges Piano and Organ. Bob accepted a position as administrative assistant of the Florence Chamber of Commerce in 1968 and remained there for 8 years. In 1976 Bob went to Price Aquatech Pools selling in ground pools throughout SC. He later took his sales skills to Leisure Pools of Florence. Bob retired in the mid 1990’s to care for Margaret after the effects of her brain surgery until her death.
In 2004 Bob married Wanda Gage. The couple made their home in Florence and enjoyed numerous camping trips in their motor home as well as other traveling. They were members of Pisgah United Methodist Church.
Bob was a charter member of The Masterworks Choir of Florence and of the Madrigals Dinner Group. He was also a long time member of the Florence Lion’s Club. Bob sang in Florence church choirs at First Presbyterian, John Calvin Presbyterian and most recently at Pisgah United Methodist until he moved to The Heritage Home of Florence.
In addition to his wife Wanda, surviving family members include; son, Stephen Norwood (Sara) of Atlanta, GA; daughter, Margaret “Meg” Norwood (Thomas Watford) of Lamar, SC; sisters, Mary N. Martin of Charlotte, NC and Hilda N. Hardin Marshall of Mt Pleasant, NC; two grandchildren Matthew and Zoe and numerous nieces and nephews. Bob was preceded in death by his youngest sister Susan N. Colston who died after a battle with cancer.
A memorial service celebrating the life of Robert E. “Bob” Norwood will be at 2:00pm, Saturday, Dec.2 at Pisgah United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends at the church following the service. The Rev. Michael Arant will conduct the service. A private internment was held earlier at Mount Hope Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society.
